My music really tells the many stories of my life, but I guess a little background would be helpful. I was born and raised in New York City, actually Brooklyn, but “New York City” always sounded cooler. If you lived in Brooklyn, you called Manhattan “The City”. My mom was a nightclub singer, and she did some big band and radio gigs.  My dad was a restaurateur in Manhattan. I seemed to spend a lot of my time on the subways.  I started playing guitar around 12 and was playing parties around 13 or 14 in a band called “Vibrations”, getting in the usual trouble.

If I had enough coin in those days, it was off to a concert at the Fillmore East for what I consider the best days of music. We hung out in Central Park and the Village, always listening to WNEW.  Then it was off to the State University of New York at Oswego.  It was a very cold place, but I learned about Molson Ale and about getting your heart broken, in reverse order. Before I knew it, I was off to Rochester, New York.  I hung out with some players from the Eastman School of Music and hooked up with my arranger and trumpet player pal, Steve Walters, and we headed down to Florida and put together a band with amazing horns called Hotsauce.

After traveling a bit to San Francisco and New Orleans, we finally landed in Asheville, North Carolina. I like the flavor of the town, the surrounding mountains with music everywhere, where environmentalism is practiced daily -- all in a place where race and sexual orientation seems very secondary. I do love that most people here seem to see the person in front of them.  I do have a fondness for the local breweries here. (A Gaelic Ale and pizza from Barley’s or The Mellow Mushroom, and yup, life is good.)  Also, when “Falling off the Planet” is released, it will be tour time, and I look forward to seeing you at the show. Oh, yes, it will be a show.

Many thanks to Bruce and Bea Swedien for their love and understanding.   Bruce, along with arranger, Steve Walters and my collaborator, John Hoekstra, always bring incredible life to my music. And lastly, my three life support systems, my wife Tina, daughter Kayln Thaw, and a big fat stinky rat cat named Miss Kitty. They understand me and always love me all in spite of myself.  I am forever in their debt.
